Achilla’s Journey to Care

When Complications Followed Childbirth, Achilla Found Her Way to Care

A referral opens the way to care

Achilla Lonyip is a 29 year old mother of seven from Lokomebu Sub-county in Kotido District, Uganda.

In February 2025, Achilla underwent an emergency cesarean section while giving birth to her seventh child because the baby was not positioned safely for delivery. Her baby survived, but about a week after the operation at Kotido Health Centre IV, Achilla began leaking urine.

Two weeks later, the doctor who performed her surgery referred her to TERREWODE Women’s Community Hospital in Soroti, where women living with fistula and other childbirth injuries can receive specialized care and support.

Achilla’s journey shows why strong referral systems matter. When childbirth complications lead to injury, women need to know that treatment exists and have a clear path to reach it.
