About Maternal Dignity Project

Maternal Dignity Project is a U.S. based nonprofit with deep, longstanding partnerships with African-led organizations preventing and treating obstetric fistula and related childbirth injuries.

Our Mission

To end obstetric fistula by strengthening the people and organizations already changing women’s lives. We provide locally led partners with flexible funding, long term partnership, mentorship, and connections that help them expand care and increase their impact.

That means supporting the full continuum of care, from prevention and community outreach to surgical treatment, physical therapy, counseling, economic training, and reintegration into their communities.

Our Vision

A world where no woman lives with a preventable childbirth injury.

A world where safe maternal care is within reach when labor becomes dangerous.

Where a fistula diagnosis is met with compassion and treatment, not shame.

Where recovery means more than healing physically.

And where women who once needed care can become advocates, entrepreneurs, educators, and leaders in their communities.

What Makes Our Work Different

Local leadership comes first.

Our partners are community rooted organizations led by people who understand the realities women face. Instead of building parallel systems around them, we invest in their leadership, capacity, staff, facilities, and long-term independence.

Recovery means treating the whole person

Surgery can close a fistula. But surgery alone doesn’t restore everything an injury may have taken.

Our partners combine medical treatment with physical therapy, counseling, livelihood support, and pathways back into family and community life. Many survivors go on to become advocates for women who are still waiting for care.

Ending fistula means preventing it

Nearly every obstetric fistula can be prevented with timely, high quality obstetric care. That’s why our goal is to extend beyond holistic treatment, reintegration, and community education to skilled maternal care, emergency obstetric capacity, and stronger local health systems.

We want fewer women to need fistula surgery because fewer women experience fistula in the first place.

Where we work

Five countries. Local leaders. One shared goal.

Across Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Kenya, Niger, and Uganda, our partners are ending fistula community by community

ARENA Medical Center

In Burkina Faso, Dr. Itengre Ouedraogo built the country's first dedicated fistula center.

ARENA brings surgery, reintegration, prevention, advocacy, and medical training together under one roof, strengthening care while building local capacity for the future.

The Future We’re Working Toward

Globally, we’ve made progress, but we’re aiming to end fistula for good.

Women are still waiting for treatment. Communities still lack reliable emergency obstetric care. And progress has slowed as funding for this work is becoming more uncertain.

That makes this moment more important, not less. We believe fistula can end. We believe the organizations closest to the work should lead the way.

And we believe every woman deserves access to care that restores her health, treats her with dignity, and gives her the opportunity to decide what comes next. Ending fistula is possible. Together, we intend to finish the work.
